Antique Swiss 10 Tune Airs Cylinder Music Box With 6 Bells Circa 1850 NiceAntique swiss 10 tune / airs cylinder music box with 6 bells! An absolutely beautiful antique swiss brass cylinder bell music box with some of the cleanest and most original parts you'll see! This antique circa 1850 cylinder bell music box features 6 bells with fully operating strikers, 10 songs/airs, an original song/air card showing each of the 10 songs, and original glass covering the mechanism. The cabinet itself shows a beautiful inlay pattern on the lid and front with an inlay of a basket on the top lid. This music box came from a collector of music boxes stretching back almost 50 years. This piece was maintained and really shows it. This music box has the original comb installed with no broken teeth as shown in the photo. The plating on the bells is very clean and original as well. The gears and mechanisms appear to have been maintained as each shows the correct lubrication for operation. There is absolutely no rust or corrosion on any of the metal or brass pieces. There is also a lyre with a needle in the shape fo an arrow showing the current song selection which is also is perfect working order.
There is a side handle that lifts up on the left side to crank the cylinder. I have run this musci box quite a few times through all 10 songs to be sure of its operation. The springs are in perfect shape. lAl of the pins on the cylinder are intact.
The brass cylinder is in near mint condition and will absoluteyl shine after a light polishing. I only sya near mint because i haven't polished it. I cannot find any missing pins on the cylinder. Something else to point out is that this antique music box plays in tune and sounds absolutely beautiful. There is a dampening lever for the bells. Once pulled, it retracts the bell strikers so that the only music playing is from the cylinder. On the right sdie of the box, there are 2 levers.
One is to start and stop the cylinder after each song. The other is to allow you to repeat the song or let the cylinder play through all 10 songs/airs. This music box features a sielnt governor. The worm, fan, and ruby are in excellent condition. The lid has 2 issues that need mentioned. There is an open seam in the wood on the right inside of the lid as shown in the photo. There are also 2 places on the top left side of the lid that will need cut out and replaced, and blended in to match the top part of the lid.I have attempted to show both of these in the photos. There is a small split in the wood panel where the 2 switches are (start/stop, repeat/continuous) as well. That is a very quick fix but i didn't want to do anything to this as again, each of us has our own methods. I have looked at a great deal of music boxes and with the exception of these 3 issues that can be touched up, and because of the absolutely wonderful condition of the mechanisms and cylinder/bells, this music box could really turn out even more beautiful than it is now. Due to its very large size (larger thna most,) when it plays, it really fills the room with melody and volume. I haven't seen an antique bell cylinder music box of this size in quite a long time. The overall dimensions with the lid closed are 23-1/2 wide x 13 depe x 10 tall. A very very large antique music box indeed. The lid is 23-1/2 wide and the music box itself is 22-3/4 wide. It features a 7-1/4 handle. The largest bell measures 2-3/8 in diameter. The comb measures 10-3/4 and the yclinder measures 11 across and 2-1/2 in diameter. This beautiful antique bell cylinder music box is in excellent condition and the mechanisms/inner workings are in fantastic shape. A beautiful addition to your antique umsic box collection!
