Antique Victorian Gem Roller Organ 1880S W28 CobsThere is gold leaf stenciling on all 4 sides, which is still in great condition. All of the stain is in good condition with the exception of a little bit of wear on the face, where the keys are (see photo). These organs were very popular in households from 1885 1915. They made over 1200 different tunes, many of which are still available. This one comes with 28 cobs (rollers they were called cobs because they look like cobs of corn after the kernels have been removed). On the bottom of the organ is a paper label with directions and a patent date of may 31, 1887. It's very simple to operate insert a cob between the spindles and crank the handle, which in turn, hits the keys and plays a melody. The wood case measures 14 w x 12 d x 8 h. Accoridng to one of the antique guides i checked, the organs alone can run between $400 $1000. The first photo is an actaul photo of the gem organ. I copied another photo from an antique site to show more detail as i wasn't able to get a clear enough picture with good lighting. The gem roller organ has bene stored in a trunk, along with its cobs for 25 years and is in excellent condition. We try to list all items with the best descriptions to reflect the item and its condition. |
